COST Wins 2023 ASA award for Outstanding Architecture: Shotcrete project of the year

COST of Wisconsin played a pivotal role in the innovative construction of the Gilder Center at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). The Gilder Center, an impressive 230,000 sq-ft addition, is gaining attention not only for its exhibits but also for its iconic design. The building, designed by Studio Gang, stands out with its curvaceous and flowing canyon like structure, featuring glass windows and light wells that flood the center with natural light.

COST, known for its expertise in theme and specialty construction, collaborated with AECOM Tishman to bring this vision to life. Instead of merely executing plans, COST took on a design-assist role, contributing to the strategic decision-making on how the architect’s vision could be realized. The Gilder Center's design presented a challenge—creating a structure with almost no straight lines or right angles, where no shapes are repeated, and no visible seams are present.

The construction involved designing, fabricating, and installing custom pipe forms and rebar to create the unique shapes of the structure. Over 900 pipe forms were individually designed and fabricated in Wisconsin, then transported to the site in New York.

The completed Gilder Center opened on May 4, 2023, showcasing COST's mastery in rebar and shotcrete. The project exemplifies our ability to push the boundaries of construction, extending beyond traditional architectural theming to create innovative and groundbreaking structures that are art in and of themselves.
